Israeli lemongrass found to make cancer cells commit suicide.
(Kfar Yedidya, Israel)—According to an article in Israel21c, researchers at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, have been directing cancer patients to an agricultural area in Kfar Yedidya, where lemongrass, among other herbs, is grown.
Why?
They’ve found that citral, the key component in the lemongrass, actually causes cancer cells to kill themselves in experiments done in vitro. Citral—which is what carries the lemon scent and taste in the lemongrass—causes apoptosis in the cancer cells (programmed cell death), while leaving healthy cells unharmed. (Photo: Israel21c)
In fact, according to the report, "a drink with as little as one gram of lemongrass contains enough citral to prompt the [reaction]."
Agriculturalist Benny Zabidov, to whom many in Israel are flocking for fresh lemongrass, is happy to help.
"When I realized what was happening," remarked Benny, "I picked up the phone and called Dr. Weinstein at Ben-Gurion University, because these people were asking me exactly the best way to consume the citral. He said to put the loose grass in hot water, and drink about eight glasses each day."
