Two Dutch Heroes Highlighted in New Documentary
"One was trained as a watchmaker, the other as a chocolate maker."
(United Kingdom)—They lived not too far apart in rural Holland in the early years of the 20th Century. One was trained as a watchmaker, the other as a chocolate maker. Coming from what might have been very mundane and common lives, these two figures, both born in The Netherlands, became national heroes with worldwide fame. These two "Dutch Heroes," who also both wrote best-selling books that have been translated into dozens of languages, have just been featured in a new documentary film called, True Stories of Dutch Courage: Corrie ten Boom and Brother Andrew.
Corrie ten Boom's family always sheltered persecuted people just before World War II. When Holland was invaded by the Nazis their generosity was put to the test. Working with the Dutch underground movement they sheltered mostly Jews from Nazi brutality. Corrie, one of the unmarried daughters, found the wall of her room made into "The Hiding Place" for these needy refugees. All of her family, except herself, were killed or died through imprisonment after being discovered. Corrie's family's exploits are contained in her book titled, The Hiding Place, which has also been made into a feature film by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
Fellow Dutch citizen, "Brother" Andrew, smuggled thousands of Bibles into Eastern Europe hidden in his VW "bug" when there was a shortage of them. His story, contained in the autobiography, God's Smuggler, traces his movements to greet other Brothers and Sisters in Christ throughout the former U.S.S.R. and supply them with Bibles and Christian study materials. Today, and now in his 80's, "Brother" Andrew spends most of his time in the terrorist training camps of groups such as Al-Qaeda, Hamas and The Taliban. He befriends what he has called "Muslim Background Believers" and helps them to face the consequence of believing on Jesus Christ when such a decision is outlawed.
The 50-minute documentary, released this month, features exclusive interviews with Brother Andrew and interview excerpts with Corrie ten Boom. The film is produced by Harvest Fields Commissioning International and its media production arm, OLI Productions. The UK-based charity has also produced 56 other films, many of which are airing on a network of 15 independent Christian TV networks.
