"This electron excess cannot be explained by the standard model of cosmic ray origin. There must be another source relatively near us that is producing these additional particles."
EDITOR'S NOTE: While this story is not necessarily a Christian story, it is fascinating, and for me a huge reminder of how omnipotent God is. As I read this story, Romans 11:33 comes to mind—"Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!" Whatever is the source of these mysterious cosmic rays, our Creator-God—King of the Universe—reigns over that as well. –Aimee Herd, BCN.
In what is being hailed as a "big discovery," scientists are perplexed over the source of newly detected cosmic rays that are "bombarding" earth from space. (Photo: NASA)
The inexplicable beams are said to be some 300 to 800 billion electron volts that seem to be originating near the solar system; within about 3,000 light years of the sun.
Louisiana State University's John Wefel, who is also Principal Investigator for Advanced Thin Ionization Calorimeter, stated, "It's the first time we've seen a discrete source of accelerated cosmic rays standing out from the general galactic background."
Noting that the discovery could not be explained by the usual origin of cosmic rays, Wefel added, "There must be another source relatively near us that is producing these additional particles."
