"I want what most people my age want, but more than that I want to make Smart-Green Choices to be environmentally conscious, not to be led into Eco-Hysteria."
The Apostle Paul told his young prot?g? Timothy, in 1 Timothy 4:12?"Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the Believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity."
I love that verse because time and time again I've seen God work mightily through young people?teens, college kids, even pre-schoolers and primary age.
I recently stumbled upon another young voice who, armed with the legacy of his great-uncle, is leading a charge to expose lies and promote the truth regarding the care of this planet.
Certainly it is a duty of Believers to appreciate and protect this earth which God has created, but that responsibility should be grounded in what is true; a concept I call "eco-veracity." Perhaps some of us have shied away from the topic of ecology because of those who have either become obsessed with popular-but-unproven statements regarding global warming, or the disturbing trend of "eco-terrorism."
Leave it to a teen to help set the ecological facts straight! Patrick Hughes?currently a freshman in high school?has begun his own organization and website known as SmartGreeenUSA, which has at its core the goal of "?pursuing the best science available, to evaluate the costs and economic impact associated with the ideas, products and policies proposed as 'green,' and to be your voice to remind the government that they are elected to serve the people, not to rule over us."
The following introduction is from Patrick's website:
My Great-Uncle Pat was a climate scientist?that's what they called them then. He wrote a few books and articles including, "A Century of Weather Service; A History of the Birth and Growth of the National Weather Service, 1870-1970" and "American Weather Stories" which comments how "American weather has helped shape our culture, national character, folklore, and conversation. It has frequented the pages of our history and, at times, changed its course?"
As I read about what he had done and learned more about the trends and changes in the scientific community related to climatology, as well as the larger environmental community, I began to discover that some things did not make sense. People were misusing issues related to the environment, and our climate for their own means. Their interest was not in what was best for all of us, but best for only a few, or best for someone's bank account, not best for you and me. My uncle's legacy led me to many insights and to honor what his work started and in the pursuit of what is right, I believe I have the responsibility to do whatever I can to proclaim the truth.
The truth is that we all want to do what we can to care for this planet we live on, to keep it safe for the children we will have, and theirs and for all future generations, but we have a responsibility to understand the choices we are making, the ramifications of what we are told is the "right" thing to do and to protect those who live now as well as those who will inherit the results of the choices made today. We have an obligation to make Smart Choices to be environmentally conscious, not to be led into "green" choices simply because someone has proclaimed them to be best for our future.
I've tried to be as active and as informed as I can, both in school and out of school, to question the facts, to look deeper into the questions, and I have found that many of those proclaiming the truth, clearly are working from a truth of their own, which is why I am devoting my time and energy to bring light into the corners of these "truths" and expose the realities.
