"It's surprising to me what's happening. But I'm not surprised about what God can do."
EDITOR'S NOTE: It's always nice (though regretfully rare) to see mainstream media acknowledge the success of family values-oriented or Christian based films, and such is the case with the movie "Fireproof," currently in theaters. Of particular importance is the fact that this past weekend, Fireproof went up against Bill Maher's mockumentary of faith entitled "Religulous;" a film that unashamedly bashes every major religion, including Christianity. Fireproof is holding steady at No. 4 for the second weekend in a row, Bill Maher's film did not even chart. Hopefully Hollywood will find within their million dollar budgets, the spare change needed to "purchase a clue" that Americans have lost patience with movies that fly in the face of what they hold dear. –Aimee Herd, BCN.
While BCN is not normally in the movie review business, it is noteworthy, and certainly newsworthy to see the success of the latest effort by the Christian film company, Georgia-based Sherwood Pictures doing so well at the box office.
It does seem to be raising eyebrows in Hollywood, as this weekend (the film's second) it held steady at #4 in the top ten movie lineup.
The film's star, former Growing Pains actor, Kirk Cameron mused over what big producers must be thinking… "Where did this come from? We didn't see it on the radar… what is 'Fireproof?!'" (Photo: Fireproofthemovie.com)
The high debut and staying power of the pro-marriage movie paved the way for numerous interviews in mainstream media by Cameron, who is also co-founder of the Christian ministry, The Way of the Master, along with Ray Comfort. Even ABC News admitted that "Christian movies sell."
Director Alex Kendrick, who co-wrote and co-produced Fireproof with his brother Stephen, explained, "We tried to make a movie that speaks to your middle-American family, and couples facing all the common issues in marriage. Hollywood is good at reflecting the values and lifestyles of people in California and New York. But there are so many of us who have a standard of morality and faith that is rarely reflected in films coming out of Hollywood."
"It's surprising to me what's happening," Kendrick added, "But I'm not surprised about what God can do."
