"When I look at them, and remember all the places they came from, sometimes it's hard to believe they're cowboys and cowgirls now."
(Burton, Texas)—It's State Fair time in Texas right now, and the 19-member Faske family is a big part of it this year. As per a report in the Star-Telegram, this multi-national, homeschooled family of ten daughters and seven sons are members of the Texas Longhorn Breeders of Tomorrow and will be exhibiting their prized animals at the fair in the upcoming days.
Their story is beyond remarkable.
It began twelve years ago when Jay and Suzanne Faske, after watching a BBC doumentary on Chinese state orphanages, made a "prayerful decision" to pursue international adoptions. Since then, they have adopted 15 of their 17 children—some of them with special needs—from orphanages in Kazakhstan, China, India, Russia and Colombia. (Photo: Faske family)
"Every child is a story," notes reporter David Casstevens, "a blessing to the couple who took out loan after loan to cover adoption and medical costs and moved out of their master bedroom so four of their daughters would have a place to sleep."
At their home on Faske's Vida Nueva Ranch, the children's farm chores—grooming and taking care of the animals—have reportedly helped them learn to socialize and bond.
"The animals have really been the turning point for some of them," said Jay Faske. "Especially ones who were older [teenagers] when we adopted them."
Said Suzanne: "When I look at them, and remember all the places they came from, sometimes it's hard to believe they're cowboys and cowgirls now."
