"Frankly my life changed from the moment God entered my heart. I'm not interested in the darkness anymore. I've got four gorgeous boys, a wife I adore, I love being alive, and I love and enjoy every moment of my life. My view has brightened and I don't want to go back into that dark place."
(Ohio, US)—I'm fairly positive that no matter how many testimonies of people coming to the Lord I hear; I will never tire of it. I find it precious-like-pearls learning of all the different ways that God chooses to reveal Himself to those who are searching—even to some who are not.
Author Joe Eszterhas—writer of Basic Instinct—has one of those testimonies of redemption, and it seems only natural to share it in the advent of his newest release, Crossbearer: a Memoir of Faith, set for publishing on September 2nd. (Photo: Associated Press/Ron Schwane )
Joe had lived the party life as a famous author of dark novels-turned-movies, but in 2001, after leaving Malibu to relocate his family in the Cleveland suburbs near where he grew up, he received some shocking news.
Throat cancer.
According to the Toledo Blade report, eighty percent of his larynx had to be removed—a tracheotomy tube inserted—and he was advised to give up his habits of drinking and smoking "immediately."
Not long after his surgery, Eszterhas—struggling with an addict's desire for what had seemed to satisfy him for so long—fell to the ground outside. He was "jittery, twitching and trembling," and every part of him "was demanding a drink and a cigarette," he writes in his account.
It was then that the author did what he says he'd never done before: cry out to God—pray. He writes that he was "shocked" by his own prayer, but suddenly he was surrounded by an "overwhelming peace," which quieted his shaking.
Eszterhas describes having seen a "shimmering, dazzling, nearly blinding brightness that made me cover my eyes with my hands."
That moment of conversion, what Joe calls an "absolutely overwhelming experience," turned his life around 180 degrees. Now devoted Catholics, Joe and his wife, Naomi attend Mass together, Joe—in his Rolling Stones t-shirt and jeans—carrying the cross down the aisle of the church.
Last year, Joe reportedly received another precious gift: healing. His oncologist told him he was not just "cured," but that his "tissue had regenerated to the point where you cannot only not tell that there was ever any cancer there, but you can't tell that there had been any surgery there."
It is what Joe and Naomi refer to as "truly a miraculous blessing."
As for the kind of books Mr. Eszterhas will be writing from now on, the seasoned author states…
"Frankly my life changed from the moment God entered my heart. I'm not interested in the darkness anymore. I've got four gorgeous boys, a wife I adore, I love being alive, and I love and enjoy every moment of my life. My view has brightened and I don't want to go back into that dark place."
