(Africa)?Baptist Global Response (BGR) is distributing Artemisia plants throughout the Horn of Africa?which has some of the highest rates of malaria on the continent?in an attempt to combat the disease. Last year alone, 2,500 plants were given to 800 farmers, effectively providing treatment to roughly 10,000 people. (Graphic: Wikipedia)
The BBC reported a drug introduced about ten years ago, Artemisinin, could kill the malaria parasite before it has time to recognize the drug's structures. An herb used by Chinese for centuries, Artemisia was reportedly tested during the Cultural Revolution in China in the late 1960s. They discovered that it cleared malaria parasites from their bodies faster than any other drug in history.
As humanitarian workers help to prevent malaria, they also share with natives the cure for sin notes BGR.
Explained spokesman Abraham Shepherd: "[It's] what I call proclamation by demonstration, really...it gives [the worker] ample opportunity to share with these people and to love them." In addition, he said it is a very effective cost-versus-benefit treatment. "Minimum capital is making the difference in thousands of people's lives."
