"My story as an American has definitely been rough at times. But I am a proud mom and grandmom. I love these kids and this country and I wouldn't change that for the world."
(Compton, California)—Gidgett Lovingood was already busy raising five sons, together with her husband, Lawrence, in the California town of Compton, in 1992. But, when her sister-in-law was tragically killed by her boyfriend, leaving four children without a mother, Gidgett couldn't help but step in.
Beginning with weekends, and eventually becoming constant, the four children became a part of Gidgett and Lawrence's family, attending church and then school with the others. Her goal was not to treat them any differently than her own kids, which she accomplished well. (Photo: FOXNews)
"My son Don said to me once, 'I never thought of my cousins as cousins—to me they were my brothers and sisters,'" said Gidgett.
When two very serious illnesses threatened her niece and son, the family somehow made it through, financially and emotionally; something Gidgett attributes to her faith, and the country she loves.
"If we had lived in another country, we might not have gotten the right medication or treatment for them. If we didn't live in America, my kids probably wouldn't have survived," said Gidgett, adding, "There have been so many times when I have had to pray for strength, but somehow we have always made it. People—friends, family, even strangers—have been really helpful to me and my family and I appreciate that."
