"I ran out of my house to join 10 people trying to lift up the bus."
(Bronx, NY)—According to the driver of a van that struck a New York City woman, on Thursday, the brakes had failed. Whether the fault of the vehicle or the driver; 33-year-old Donnette Sanz, who was pregnant, was crossing a street in the Bronx when Walter Walker's van suddenly hit her, pushing her in front of a bus.
Bystanders jumped into action, however, with about 20 people joining together to lift the bus off of the pregnant Sanz.
"I ran out of my house to join 10 people trying to lift up the bus," Cheryl Brown, one of the bystanders said. "At first, we couldn't get it up, so then another 10 people ran over to help, and we got the bus up and the lady out."
Sanz was rushed to the hospital, and her baby was saved—delivered by emergency C-section. Unfortunately, Donnette Sanz was pronounced dead shortly after her baby's birth.
According to the AP report, the baby—who was later named Sean Michael—weighed just 3lbs. 6oz., and was listed in critical condition.
