"We have associates trying to go against each other trying to see who's going to gossip first. They are taking it seriously. It's already reduced the gossip in the store."
(Coloma, Michigan)—In a campaign called "Gossip Free," CBN News reports that on August 8, Pastor Kevin Hester of The Sanctuary Baptist Church in Coloma, Michigan, challenged his congregation and Christians across the country not to gossip, and not to listen to gossip, for at least eight days.
The report states that as a victim of malicious gossip himself, Hester says the experience changed his life. "It can be like cancer," he said. "If you don't take care of it early, it just grows and grows until ultimate destruction occurs." (Photo: CBN)
Response to Hester's "Gossip Free" challenge has reportedly been "tremendous" and has attracted national media attention.
The campaign has even affected "toxic talk" at the workplace. Said Rebekah Trosper, a department manager at a local Wal-Mart introduced the challenge to her co-workers. "We have associates trying to go against each other trying to see who's going to gossip first," she said. "They are taking it seriously. It's already reduced the gossip in the store."
