Proposed legislation would ban some from discriminating against health care professionals that have moral objections to abortion.
(Washington, D.C.)—Pro-life leaders in the United States are urging supporters to call the White House immediately to ask that President George Bush protect the conscience rights of health care workers.
The number to call is (202) 456-1414 (ask the switchboard operator to be put through to the public comment line).
Pro-life supporters can also call Michael Leavitt, the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services at (202) 690-7000.
Pro-abortion groups are upset over a proposed Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) regulation which would ban individuals and entities receiving federal funds from discriminating against health care professionals and institutions that have moral or religious objections to abortion and abortifacient birth control.
The HHS regulation defines abortion to include "any of the various procedures—including the prescription, dispensing and administration of any drug or the performance of any procedure or any other action—that results in the termination of the life of a human being in utero between conception and natural birth, whether before or after implantation."
