(New York, NY)—Though some may not think of this as a blessing, I definitely considered growing up only about 20 minutes away from New York City a huge blessing, and often took advantage its benefits.
Some of those perks included visiting Hayden Planetarium; the top of the World Trade Center (no longer there of course); taking in a ballet or symphony at Lincoln Center, or a baseball game at Shea; warming your hands and stomach in the winter with hot chestnuts purchased from a street vendor, or just walking through Central Park sipping a real Italian egg cream (it's Italian soda—no egg involved).
One of the highlights during a grade school field trip was going to see Godspell, on Broadway—the costumes, the passion and the simple power of the message were amazing! (Photo: Wikipedia)
If you're not familiar with it, Godspell (which actually means Gospel) is a musical by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak. It is a dramatic portrayal of the Gospel according to Matthew, in a very contemporary setting, and was first released off-Broadway in the early '70's; then on Broadway in 1976. The popular song, Day by Day, came out of that musical.
One of the most impacting aspects of going to see Godspell as an elementary student was taking communion during its presentation, which the cast offered to those who wished to partake of it.
Now, after more than 30 years, Godspell is returning to Broadway, opening at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on October 23rd, with special "preview performances" beginning at the end of September.
According to a Christian Post report, the classic musical will feature Gavin Creel as Jesus.
