According to a report in The Oregonian, Jansen and Gomez believe God brought them together in 2004 through Pastor Weldon Jones, "a man they describe as a soft-spoken Baptist missionary with a powerful way of touching hearts, who died in a car accident a month after they met."
"It's like he flipped a switch in me," Jansen said, speaking of Jones during the first meeting when he introduced him to Gomez. "He touched me spiritually and mentally."
Since Gomez's accident, Jansen?with the financial support of his church and medical help from Providence St. Vincent Medical Center?has promised to care for him.
Jansen was quoted as saying that even though Gomez is back in Mexico now, and his new leg should last about five years, if there's anything he needs, he will welcome him back anytime.
"He's one of my family," he said. "He's in my prayers every day."
