"...it's safer to be in the military because if you get wounded, you'll probably survive."
(Washington, DC)—According to a report done by the Congressional Research Service, "more active members of the military died during two years of peacetime, in the early 1980s, than died during a two-year period of war in Iraq and Afghanistan."
The surprising study stated that in 1981 and 1982, there were 4,699 members of the U.S. military who died during "limited troop deployment" in the Middle East. That number is compared to 2005 and 2006, during "large-scale" military actions there, when the number of deaths was 3,800—almost 900 less than during peacetime.
John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org, explained, "It's safer to be in the military because your accidental death rate has gone down; it's safer to be in the military because if you get wounded, you'll probably survive."
