"To say that you can't be a thinking, intellectually fulfilled scientist and embrace faith is bunk."
(Ontario, Canada)—For those interested in robotics, meet Rosalind Picard, a Christian scientist from MIT who specializes in the field. But she wasn't always a Christian. According to a report published in The Record, Picard was raised an atheist until someone challenged her to read the Bible. (Photo: David Bebee, Record Staff)
After working her way through the Bible several times, she says, "I started to have a very big change of heart." Now, she adds, "To say that you can't be a thinking, intellectually fulfilled scientist and embrace faith is bunk."
Speaking recently at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Picard warned that many scientists not only view humans simply as machines "with meat," but that they believe machines will eventually be superior to humans.
Currently, Picard is at work to impart a range of responsive "emotions" (not feelings, she stresses) to robots. Why? While human faces can make 10,000 different expressions, robotic machines cannot communicate to a user that they are experiencing the kinds of difficulties in processing something that humans would call "frustrating."
Disclaimer: We do not necessarily endorse all of the personal views of scientists and doctors featured in Breaking Christian News, but we do encourage prayer for those Christians—both new and mature—laboring in the science and medical fields. Your prayers have impacted, and will continue to impact, their lives and the fruit of their research.
