"…the house started shaking. Both of us thought it was an earthquake. And the next thing you know, I got sucked down into the basement..."
(Tuscola County, Michigan)—About a week ago, an amazing miracle of protection and survival happened in Tuscola County, Michigan, when a powerful tornado ripped through Joe Soyring and Nichole Opperman’s home. (Photo: ABC12.com)
Before Joe and Nichole had the chance to gather their two children and head for the safety of the basement, the storm suddenly tore through the house.
Joe recounted what happened next: "…the house started shaking. Both of us thought it was an earthquake. And the next thing you know, I got sucked down into the basement...and I watched the tornado go that way."
When the dust cleared, Joe and Nichole located each other and their 3-year-old daughter, and found they were alright. But little 15-month-old Blake, who had been lying in his crib, was nowhere to be found.
Heeding the frantic screams from Blake’s parents, neighbor Jeff Hawks joined the couple as they carefully pulled away the wreckage that once was their house.
"All of a sudden, I heard this little whimper and I told everybody to be quiet so we could hear it," Hawks explained to reporters. "And the baby was under this huge pile of debris, probably about this deep (motioning about five feet high)—floor rafters, you know, everything."
Underneath all the rubble that was on top of baby Blake, a mattress was found to be his protection. Aside from a few scratches, Blake was fine. He is being called "The Miracle Baby."
