(United Kingdom)—The soft looks of a new wonder material, called d3o, belie its amazing capacity to protect against severe impact pain. Like bright orange bread dough, the almost liquidy substance can be pulled into a variety of shapes, but when it is struck by something it hardens, or "tenses" up, much like a human muscle tenses in response to stimuli.
According to a report in The Daily Telegraph, d3o protects so well that it is now being used in a variety of sports gear. It is even being used in gloves distributed to riot police in the U.S. (Photo: Daily Telegraph)
Richard Palmer, the inventor, is "so confident of its miraculous properties, that he is happy to give demonstrations that involve him being smashed over the head or across the knee with a spade."
"It is not a circus act, it is a product that goes into your clothing. Hopefully, you will never have to use it, but, if you do receive an impact, you will get a much higher level of protection than normal."
