"Once this law goes into effect, I don't think you can guarantee that even churches themselves would be exempt."
(Washington, DC)—When it comes to measures that concern and sometimes threaten family values in the U.S., American citizens have not had much of a breather this year. In keeping with that pace is a bill that may voted on this month, by the U.S. House of Representatives, known as the Employment Non-Discrimination Act or "ENDA." (Photo: Citizen Link)
The measure would restrict employers in the U.S. from using "actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity" in their decisions related to the hiring or firing of employees. The danger in the wording of this bill is that, although it purports to exempt religious organizations and churches, they would be have to be considered "religious enough" to be exempted from the special employment rules, according to Rep. Roy Blunt.
That would mean that, if passed, the bill could keep businesses such as Christian bookstores, and even some churches, from making hiring or firing decisions based on an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity.
