"The story of Marvin Andrews is one that needs to be told. It is about courage, endurance and commitment. It is a story that will inspire thousands... I was astounded by his personal commitment to do good in the community. Now a minister of his church, he wanted to tell people on drugs or alcohol there was hope. He is a gentle giant admired throughout the whole community. His first 30 years have made history from the Caribbean to Europe and the stage of world football. He will continue to make history for years to come."
(Scotland)—"Marvelous" Marvin Andrews is a 6'3" soccer sensation. He is also a preacher in Scotland. God, Andrews is quoted as saying, is responsible not just for his sporting success but also for at least three "miracle" cures from injury, his salvation from a burning jumbo jet and his rejection of various high-profile clubs.
According to Scottish Christian News, the giant born-again Christian, whose book "Marvelous Marvin" is being printed in serial form in the Sunday Mail, also tells how he snubbed English Premiership clubs to return to Raith Rovers, the U.K. Prime Minister's hometown team, after God first spoke to him through an American prophet and then through Brown himself.
Says Prime Minister Gordon Brown in an article printed in the Sunday Mail: "The story of Marvin Andrews is one that needs to be told. It is about courage, endurance and commitment. It is a story that will inspire thousands. And it is, literally, a story of rags to riches. For Marvin, the rags were all too real—playing football in his bare feet. Now captain of Trinidad and Tobago, a Rangers star, a championship winner, Marvin could be excused for enjoying the adulation of the crowds. But he is interested much less in fame and fortune than in helping those in need...His real ambition is to help young people off drugs, out of anti-social behavior and into a more fruitful life."
"When I first talked to Marvin, I was astounded by his personal commitment to do good in the community. Now a minister of his church, he wanted to tell people on drugs or alcohol there was hope. He wanted to run sports leagues to take them off the streets. He is a gentle giant admired throughout the whole community. His first 30 years have made history from the Caribbean to Europe and the stage of world football. He will continue to make history for years to come."
