"It was extremely long. Never in my life had I experienced this long an earthquake."
[UPDATED-21:48 PT] (Peru)-A devastating earthquake with powerful aftershocks hit Peru on Wednesday evening, causing the death of at least 450 people, with more than 1,500 left injured.
According to a CNN report, the 8.0 magnitude quake continued for two minutes, and was followed by strong aftershocks, one of which was felt on Thursday, and measured in at 6.0. (Photo: AFP/Getty)
Peru's shaking prompted a tsunami advisory for Hawaii, which was later cancelled. Many of the buildings and homes that were destroyed in the earthquake were old, the report said. Rescue efforts were also hampered by damage to a major coastal highway, caused by the quake.
Gladys Tarnawiecki, a Lima resident, said, "This has been the most terrifying experience we've had. It was extremely long. Never in my life had I experienced this long an earthquake."
