"Every time the words 'sailor' or 'seafarer' are spoken amongst God's people it encourages us to believe that the Church shares our commitment to care for seafarers in such a way as to leave them thanking the Lord for his unfailing love."
(U.K.)-Inspire Magazine reports that the British & International Sailors' Society is delighted that an estimated 6,000 local congregations will be gathering and celebrating Sea Sunday 2007 over the coming year.
Sea Sunday, according to the report, was nominated by the charity "to allow the general public to give thanks to the 1.5 million seafarers throughout the world who work on ships to enable many everyday essentials to be imported to the UK."
On July 8, services were reportedly held "in churches, on board ships in port and at sea, in Society Seafarers' Centres, harbours, residential homes, on beaches, cliff tops and quaysides," but Sunday commemorations and activities will continue throughout the year.
Concerning the many donations received for sailors, Principal Chaplain for the Society, David Potterton, said: "The truth is that everything helps. Every prayer, every woolly hat, every Bible reading, every video, DVD and paperback book, every hymn sung, every pound given is all important to the Society's ministry. In fact, every time the words 'sailor' or 'seafarer' are spoken amongst God's people it encourages us to believe that the Church shares our commitment to care for seafarers in such a way as to leave them thanking the Lord for his unfailing love."
