"I could see where branches were shredded, which told me it was definitely coming out of the sky."
(Dubuque, Iowa)-It's a good thing 78-year-old Jan Kenkel, of Iowa, wasn't watching TV early in the morning, Thursday. If she had, she may have been hit by about 50 lbs. of ice that fell through her roof at about 5:30 a.m., landing in her television room, along with bits of wood, insulation, and pieces of her ceiling.
"It sounded like a bomb!" exclaimed Kenkel, who'd been standing in her kitchen prior to the intrusion. "I jumped about a foot!" she added.
Just one street over, at about the same time on Thursday, Karle and Mary Beth Wiggington were also visited by the falling frozen chunks, in their front yard and street. "I could see where branches were shredded, which told me it was definitely coming out of the sky," said Karle, adding that they found the ice after hearing a strange "whooshing" sound.
Karle described the ice as being "pure white," and thought the original piece must've been about the size of a basketball.
Authorities reportedly don't have a definitive explanation for the falling ice, but speculated that it could have come from an aircraft or upper atmosphere accumulation.
