According to the AP report, little Booker West had been splashing his small hands in a birdbath in his grandparents' northern Colorado back yard, when a rattlesnake-which had coiled up near the toddler-suddenly struck. In the split-second before the snake's fangs reached the boy, Zoey, the family's pet Chihuahua, jumped in between, taking the bites instead.
Booker's grandfather, Marty Long, recounted the dog's quick actions, "She got in between Booker and the snake, and that's when I heard her yipe."
At first Zoey seemed to succumb to the snake's poison, but after treatment, she was soon back to normal.
