The first earthquake was 6.7, the second 6.8 in magnitude.
(Kashiwazaki, Japan)—Earlier today, and just hours after a 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit Japan, causing around 500 to 800 injuries, at least 8 deaths, and extensive damage, another larger quake struck off the northwestern coast—this time 6.8 in magnitude.
The United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center stated Monday morning that: "an earthquake occurred about 145 km (90 miles) west-northwest of Fukui or 460 km (285 miles) west-northwest of Tokyo at 8:17 AM MDT, Jul 16, 2007 (11:17 PM local time in Japan)."
According to the Reuters news report, the reactors at Japan's top nuclear plant had to be shut down after the quake, when it was found to have caused a "small leak of radioactive materials."
