Rapper Ja Rule, who stars in "I'm in Love with a Church Girl," describes his journey to Christ as progressive, but profound, "little steps."
(New York, NY)—Rapper Ja Rule, who plays the main character in the highly-acclaimed new film "I'm in Love with a Church Girl," recently sat down for an interview with HuffPost Live host Marc Lamont Hill.
In the interview, Ja Rule talks about former struggles (he recently spent two years in prison) and how his earlier experience being raised as a Jehovah's Witness had "turned him off" to religion and God.
Indeed, it was when he began touring churches around the country to promote "I'm in Love with a Church Girl," that he says he began getting a taste of mainstream Christianity. His initial observations weren't necessarily positive.
For example, questions he was asked, like, "Are you saved and born again?" went completely over his head. Some churches, he said, advertised "Come as You Are," but he couldn't help but notice scruffier individuals being turned away at the door.
As a curious "pre-believer" he was stumped by some of the things he saw and heard.
It all changed, apparently, when he attended Hillsong Church in New York City. There, he saw people truly being welcomed coming as they were. The upbeat environment and pastor who dressed and talked as if he were one of the congregation, spoke to Ja Rule in a way that not only astounded him, but caused him to want to become a true Christian.
Watching the video (he begins talking about his Hillsong experience around 13:00 minutes into the interview) and hearing the rapper's testimony in his own words is a needful reminder that how we present ourselves to the unsaved can make all the difference to those searching for Christ.
