Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas signed a new law into effect last week that would prevent girls under the age of 18 from getting abortions without parental consent. The Senate had approved the bill 27-3 last month. During the debate, Republican Sen. David Bisbee exclaimed, "I just can't comprehend a society where a child can get an abortion without a parent's permission, yet can't get an aspirin at the school office without that permission.” Governor Huckabee told legislators during the signing conference that the bill was another step in the protection of life.
