Two unnamed UN diplomats have told the UK Independent that Bethany Kozma, a senior adviser at the US Agency for International Development's office of Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, recently declared that the "US is a pro-life country" during a private meeting.

The remark came in the context of finalizing the UN Commission on the Status of Women's annual report. Kozma reportedly led the American delegation in requesting that all instances of the phrase "modern contraception" be replaced with "family planning," a broader term that could include abstinence education rather than just birth control drugs and devices.

One unnamed UN diplomat told the Independent that Kozma's statement was "shocking," and indicated that the United States under President Donald Trump took a "weaker" stance on so-called "reproductive rights" than even Saudi Arabia (where women cannot have an actual medical procedure of any kind without a male relative's consent).

Both Kozma and the Trump administration refused to comment on the specific incident, but one American official provided a more generalized response to the Independent.

"While we can't comment on ongoing diplomatic negotiations, the multi-agency US delegation is representing the administration's policies and priorities at the CSW," the official said. "Also, in response to your question related to US support for women's health, as the world's largest bilateral donor to global health programs, the US remains committed to helping women and children thrive, particularly in countries where the need is greatest"...
