J. Lee Grady, Editor of Charisma magazine, wrote a very interesting meditation this week, on three strange and inexplicable miracles that happened when Jesus was crucified.
The first is the "shroud of darkness" which covered the land from noon to 3pm. Some have tried to explain away this phenomenon by saying it was a solar eclipse. However, eclipses don't last for three hours, Grady points out, and it was not a gradual darkening, but the words used in the text imply that it was very sudden.
The next miracle that Grady focuses on is found in Matthew 27:51 when the temple veil was ripped in two. Says Grady, "It must have been terrifying for the Jewish priests who witnessed this while they were serving in the Holy Place. These priests had never peered into the Holy of Holies. Suddenly, at the moment that Jesus announced, ‘It is finished' from the cross, the thick curtain that symbolically separated men from God was ripped down the middle by an invisible power. And the priests could see the ark of the covenant exposed!"
The third strange and miraculous occurrence was the earthquake which, Grady notes, was not your normal geological happening, but was felt in other countries as well.
