Melton's wife, Heather, told USA Today that her 29-year-old husband jumped into gear and saved her life after the assault started. The couple, from Big Sandy, Tennessee, married in 2016, USA Today reported.

Sonny Melton was a nurse and Heather Melton is an orthopedic surgeon at Henry County Medical Center in Paris, Tennessee.
