Business Insider reports that many retailers are closing their doors on Thanksgiving Day in response to a backlash over the Black Friday tradition. They say it will provide a public relations boost and help them avoid bad press.

The Mall of America, which has been open on Thanksgiving Day for the past four years, took the lead in the new initiative, vowing to close its doors until the feasting is over.

The Mall says Thanksgiving is about family, not blowing cash. It will reopen at 5:00 a.m. to start its Black Friday festivities.

Costco, Home Depot and countless other retailers are following suit.
