It was the first visit by an Iranian president to Vatican City since 1999.
Rouhani, during his 4-day European trip, came to Rome bearing a gift for the pope; a hand-made rug which he said was made in the Iranian city of Qhom.
During his 40-minute meeting with Pope Francis, Rouhani reportedly said, "I ask you to pray for me."
Pope Francis called the visit "a real pleasure."
