(Minnesota)—According to a Reuters/Charisma News report, a couple who wishes to remain anonymous, dropped a check for $500,000 into a Rosemount, Minnesota Salvation Army Red Kettle this past weekend. (Screengrab via NBC Nightly News)

The couple reportedly went through rough times when they were first married, living on discarded food from a local grocery store.

In a position now to give back, the couple said they now want to help others. At the same time they were honoring one of their fathers who had served in WWI and had been "grateful for coffee and doughnuts the Salvation Army had provided soldiers." (Screengrab via NBC Nightly News)

"You get to a point in life where it's time to take care of others, the way you were taken care of," the couple said.

The Salvation Army is keeping the donors' names private at their request.
