Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz (52)—affectionately known as "GI Joe"—was in pursuit of several suspects after responding to a call citing "suspicious activity" in Lake County, Illinois, on Tuesday morning.

When backup arrived, they found Officer Gliniewicz down, near U.S. Hwy 12; his gun was near him in the "marshy area."

A manhunt persisted through the day and night and continued on Wednesday, with schools in the area announcing they would stay closed.

The suspects were described as two white males and one black male.

The community of Fox Lake went into mourning at the news of Officer Gliniewicz' death, and many have placed flowers and balloons in memorial outside the town's police station.

Terry Resetar, Gliniewicz' mother-in-law told reporters, "He's got four sons who are going to have to go on alone."

According to the report, Officer Gliniewicz was leader of Fox Lake's police "Explorer" program, which "gives youths who aspire to careers in law enforcement an up-close experience."

Lake County Undersheriff Raymond Rose noted, "He, as the leader of that, had a tremendous impact on a lot of young people in the county."
