"If you're a stand-up comedian and someone diagnoses you [as] clinically depressed, that'll throw a kink in your trunk. For the first time in a long, long time, I didn't feel funny. I didn't feel like God could use me. That's when I realized that my relationship with God was about who He was and not about how I felt." -Chonda Pierce

A Christian, with a powerful testimony of battling depression and overcoming tragedy, she recently was named the top certified female comedian by the Recording Industry Association of America for reportedly selling more comedy DVDs than any other comedian—secular or Christian. In an interview with Charisma, Pierce explains one of the darkest times in her life when, within a two-year period, two of her sisters died and her father abandoned their family.

"They used to make a joke," said Pierce, that went, "'Well, you'll find out how saved you are when you share a bedroom with your mother.' My mother prayed for me out loud every day—and I'm in the bed with her. Out of that great dysfunction came some really good material."

"In comedy," she concluded, "the reason we laugh is because we feel a common denominator or connection. It's the same way when we are sharing our testimony or our story."
