Miracle in the Mudslide: How Mother and Baby Escaped Sure Death

(Oso, WA)—Still being treated at a Seattle hospital for injuries sustained in the catastrophic mudslide that devastated the community of Oso, Washington, 22-year-old Amanda Skorjanc spoke publicly for the first time about her, and her baby's, miraculous escape.

Recalling the moment the slide hit, Skorjanc said everything began shaking. The lights in her home flickered. "I looked out our front door," she said, "and it was like a movie. Houses were exploding and the next thing I remember—the next thing I see—is the neighbor's chimney coming into our front door."

"I know that God was with us ," she added, "because as it was going I cried out to Him and I said, 'Please save us!'"

After her home slid 600 feet before stopping, Skorjanc, clinging to her 5-month-old son for dear life, was trapped with her baby in twisted debris. Incredibly, they were cushioned between a broken couch and recliner, in a pocket that allowed rescuers to eventually set them free.

During the harrowing experience, Skorjanc said she distracted herself from the shock and pain of multiple broken bones and fractures by praying and comforting her baby.
