mutation(New York, NY)—In the not too distant future, using chemotherapy to fight cancer, will be a thing of the past. So believes top medical analyst Robert Goldberg of the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest. (Photo via slate.com)

According to Newsmax, Goldberg, who notes that cancer treatment is on the cusp of huge advances, is quoted as saying targeting cancer-causing gene mutations—instead of a malignancy's site of origin—is the next frontier and has already proven to be a game-changer for some of the most virulent types of the disease, including pancreatic cancer.

"We're entering an era that isn't a matter of where the cancer is," says Goldberg, "but the mutation that causes the cancer."

Even medical language will change, predicts Goldberg, with doctors no longer addressing the type of cancer a patient has, but the gene mutation that caused it.

"Multiple myeloma used to be incurable," he adds. "Now, if you get it early enough, you can expect to live a normal life."

The Newsmax report goes on to list recent success stories and concludes with Goldberg's proclamation that there will be few IV stations in cancer clinics of the future. Instead, "there will be pills dispensed that cancer patients will take home. And those pills will cure them."
