”He is now resting. He is now at peace. Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father.”
After being ill for some time, former South African President Nelson Mandela died late on Thursday, at 95.
Mandela had been in and out of the hospital numerous times in recent months.
South African President Jacob Zuma announced the former leader’s passing noting that “what made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human. We saw in him what we seek in ourselves."
According to the CNN.com report, Mandela will have a state funeral, with all flags in the nation to be flown at half-staff.
The report on CNN stated: In a nation healing from the scars of apartheid, Mandela became a moral compass. His defiance of white minority rule and incarceration for fighting against segregation focused the world's attention on apartheid, the legalized racial segregation enforced by the South African government until 1994.
