"Doing the Lord's work, one tip at a time." That's the mission statement of the Instagram account "@tipsforjesus" started by an anonymous Christian who wants to defy the reputation of Christians being "bad tippers" in the market place.
To date, it is estimated that the more than $54,000 has been distributed throughout the country using the method.
The mystery tipper has reportedly left thousands of dollars in tips at restaurants in San Francisco and Chicago, with one server at The Hungry Cat in L.A. Receiving a $1,000 on a nearly $266 bill.
Tips for Jesus has been so impacting on its recipients, that it has made headline news in major media outlets.
One MSN report reads, "A secret Santa is crisscrossing the United States, bearing a credit card and an extraordinary spirit of generosity, leaving enormous tips to waiters and waitresses before ducking out of restaurants from California to Chicago."
The Huffington Post headline read: "'Tips for Jesus' Shows Outrageous Christian Generosity."
So how does this mystery tipper—or tippers—operate? When given the bill, they write in the tip amount with the notation @tipsforjesus and snap a photo of it before giving it to their server.
