Descendants want to "rectify the unspeakable bitterness" that divides the two peoples.
(Poland)—Descendants of Nazi SS officers, together with Holocaust survivors and their offspring, have reportedly begun a week-long march across Poland. Hundreds of people from all over Europe are expected to attend the closing ceremonies. (Israel news photo: Flash 90)
According to an Israel National News report, participants will march through the sites of former Nazi death camps, beginning at Auschwitz and ending in Treblinka, northeast of Warsaw.
The report noted that a descendant of an SS officer asked for forgiveness during an opening ceremony. Her grandfather had been an electrician who had installed the wire fence at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
