Earthquake Evidence Seems to Put Date of Jesus' Crucifixion at April 3, 33 A.D.

(Israel)—The 27th chapter of Matthew says an earthquake coincided with the crucifixion of Jesus.

Now, geologists Jefferson Williams of Supersonic Geophysical, and Markus Schwab and Achim Brauer of the German Research Center for Geosciences, have concluded an earthquake could likely have occurred on the day they believe Jesus was crucified. (Photo of Marco Palmezzano painting/Uffizi Gallery)

Although the day and date of Jesus' crucifixion have been "known with a fair degree of precision," the year has apparently been in question.

The investigation, from the International Geology Review, reportedly studied three different cores from the beach of the Ein Gedi Spa adjacent to the Dead Sea, which revealed evidence of an earthquake between 26 A.D. and 36 A.D. The team also studied the Jewish calendar and astronomy clues.

Williams noted that they discovered earthquake evidence "during the years when Pontius Pilate was procurator of Judea and when the earthquake of the Gospel of Matthew is historically constrained."
