Was This the "Hellish" Prison Where the Apostle Paul Spent His Final Days?

As reported by The Daily Mail, the Mamertine Prison, "a dingy complex that now lies beneath a Renaissance church"—St. Joseph of the Carpenters—"has long been venerated as the place where the apostle was shackled before he was killed on the spot where the Vatican now stands."

Both Peter and Paul were said to have been imprisoned in the jail by the Emperor Nero, and legend has it that they caused "an underground spring to miraculously rise up from the ground so that they could baptize their guards and fellow prisoners."
