"We can never express enough thanks to those who have sacrificed, or enough encouraging words about what Memorial Day still means to some of us..." -John Melia, WWP Founder

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, many of us anticipate reveling in an extra day off—perhaps spent with family as the barbeque is fired up.

Wounded Warrior ProjectHowever, as the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) reminds us, Memorial Day is a time set aside to honor those who have bravely served America having made the ultimate sacrifice in protection of the freedoms we hold dear.

In hopes of harkening US citizens to the true intention of the holiday, the Wounded Warrior Project has posted an opportunity for feedback on what "Memorial Day means to you."

John Melia, Founder of the WWP said in a recent email, "We can never express enough thanks to those who have sacrificed, or enough encouraging words about what Memorial Day still means to some of us... Simply expressing your thoughts ... It'll make you think ... It'll break your heart ... It'll make your spirit soar ... It will make you realize, yet again, the importance of Memorial Day!"

According to their mission statement, WWP exists to:

To raise awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women

To help severely injured service members aid and assist each other

To provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of severely injured service members
