Subway's Essay Contest Re-launched to Include Home-schoolers

"Given the widespread success of home-schoolers on academic-achievement tests, it only makes sense that they should be welcome as a valued and highly successful part of the education community."

Subway Restaurants had a great idea: an Essay Contest for elementary students, with a prize of athletic equipment for the winner's public, private or parochial school.

Subway essay contestThe only problem was they had inadvertently excluded a strong and growing number of students across America—those who are home-educated. It wasn't long before Subway began hearing from home-schooling students and their parents. (Graphic: Subway Restaurants)

To their credit, Subway listened to the outcry; apologizing and launching a second Essay Contest that would include home-schooling students.

Focus on the Family Action's Candy Cushman, commended Subway for acting quickly to rectify the oversight. "It's encouraging to see home-schoolers receiving the respect and equal opportunity they deserve," Cushman said. "Given the widespread success of home-schoolers on academic-achievement tests, it only makes sense that they should be welcome as a valued and highly successful part of the education community."
