Parliament was in session as the attacks unfolded and members were reportedly "keen to show they were undeterred" ... Some were said to have posted selfies of themselves looking calm, even as gun battles raged in surrounding office buildings. But the reality was something altogether different.

The attacks ended after a standoff lasting several hours, during which the gunmen holed up in parliamentary office buildings.
