Father Albert S. Pandingan was leading Sunday mass when an attacker tried to murder him and everyone else in the church.

Authorities say the bomber charged a priest at the altar, hoping to detonate the bomb in his backpack.

However, the bomb never went off.

The assailant continued trying to chase down the priest until the congregation finally stopped him and called the police.

"We have seized a backpack from the perpetrator. The perpetrator is alive and injured and there are no casualties in this incident," said National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar told Beritasatu.

Jakarta Globe reports the police found what appeared to be a drawing of the Islamic State flag. Authorities are investigating to see if the suspect is related to any possible terror cells in Indonesia.

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation and has suffered a series of deadly attacks by Muslim jihadists, the worst being a 2002 terror attack in Bali that left 202 people dead.
