Jesus to Star in Virtual Reality Film

The groundbreaking Jesus film, called "Jesus VR—The Story of Christ," will be the first of its kind because it is shot with a different lens—virtual reality technology. That means viewers will watch the life, ministry, and crucifixion of Christ in a highly-immersive 360 degree format.

Movie-goers will be able to see the Jesus story up close and personal with special virtual reality glasses or headsets instead of on the big screen.

Viewers can purchase virtual glasses like Oculus Rift or Google Cardboard, an investment Director David Hensen believes is well worth it.

The 90-minute film was shot in Matera, Italy, the historic village that was also the setting for Mel Gibson's highly acclaimed "Passion of the Christ."

Jesus will be played by actor Tim Fellingham, who calls the new Jesus film an "exciting" and "groundbreaking project."

"It's as exciting a take on the story of Christ as I've ever seen and its production values will absolutely set a new benchmark for virtual reality," Fellingham said.

The movie is set to premiere Aug. 31 at the 2016 Venice Film Festival, but will be available for the public on Dec. 25.
