The Steps These City Leaders Took to Preserve a Cross after Opposition from the Freedom From Religion Foundation

The cross was reportedly built by a family that attended First United Methodist Church, so it was natural to sell the 20 X 20 plot of land—containing the cross—to the same church.

They would sell the land underneath the cross to make it private, and sell it to a church to preserve the structure.
 
According to The Blaze report, Texas state law allows for properties to be "sold to religious groups so long as those groups retain land locally and agree to revitalize it."

The Freedom From Religion Foundation seemed somewhat satisfied, but also warned that they would be looking into the sale to make sure everything went through the "proper channels."
