Three new cases have been reported, bringing the total up to 12 in the state.

Gov. Rick Scott said all the cases are from people who became infected after traveling to other countries.

But there are still concerns the mosquito-borne virus could spread inside the U.S.

"The mosquito that causes the Zika virus is common in Florida," Scott said.

"Mosquito control is key to combating mosquito borne illnesses. That is why the executive order I signed last night says that special attention for mosquito sprays should be in residential areas," he said.

Florida's warm climate, year-round mosquitoes and revolving door of international travelers make it especially vulnerable.

But Governor Scott says the state is preparing like it would for a hurricane, telling residents and tourists Florida is safe.
