The state House passed a bill outlawing the "dilation and evacuation" method, which involves dismembering a fetus in the womb and then removing the pieces.

The procedure can still be performed if necessary to save the mother's life.

The Kansas Senate approved the bill last month and the governor has promised to sign it.

Abortion-rights groups pledged to challenge the law in court.
